Reviewing a Classic: Back to the Future

Hey everyone, as part of my studies at university I was tasked with writing a short review about a movie of my choice. I decided to choose a classic that I believe everyone should have watched at least once: Back to the Future. Hoping that you will like it as much as my tutor did – the review and the movie – I am sharing it with you right here. Enjoy!

Back to the Future is the first of three action packed science-fiction comedies about Marty McFly and his time travels. The story begins in 1985 where his friend Doctor Emmet Brown (aka ‘Doc’) invents a time machine in form of a DeLorean sports car. Marty is accidentally sent to the year 1955 where he seeks the help of Doc’s younger counterpart to find an energy source to power the DeLorean and get back to the present (or from Doc’s point of view, the future, hence the title). However, things get complicated as Marty runs into his young mother who falls in love with him. Now he has to find his young father, who is a complete loser that his mother isn’t attracted to at all, and make them fall in love with each other, otherwise he will never be born and simply fade away.

Back to the Future is not the best movie in the world but probably the one with the highest ‘re-watch’ value I have ever encountered. The characters are well thought out, and the comedic situations they are put in as well as their reactions to it are guaranteed to make you laugh if not at least chuckle and smile. Together with the captivating musical score and a compelling story, this movie will glue you to your seats every time.

If you want the comedy of ‘Forrest Gump’ with less drama combined with the action of ‘Indiana Jones’ and an added element of ‘The Time Machine’, Back to the Future is for you. And even if you are not into any of these things, I recommend giving it a try and watching it anyway.

What happens when you cross the streams?

I’m getting more and more excited about the new Ghostbusters game, although we don’t know all that much about it yet. Why do I get excited then? It’s… it’s simply the Ghostbusters, and they’re awesome!

But here’s an interesting fact: In this post the good folks from joystiq report that there’s gonna be several multiplayer options in the game. But …

The problem, see, is that Atari forgot one important piece of information concerning any Ghostbusters multiplayer experience: What happens when you cross the streams? It’s a vital detail and, frankly, we’re shocked it’s not even mentioned.

Continueing from my previous post, I’ld like to point out a particular awesome gang: The Ghostbusters!
I mean come on, they have Proton Packs, Ghost Traps, and most important, they drive around in their awesome Ectomobile which makes that unique siren sound. Also, there will be a new video game soon. (Actually, the old trailer is a lot funnier.)

The Ghostbusters are so well known in pop culture, you can ask anyone on the street, on the bus or in your office or school: “Who you gonna call?!” and they’ll respond to you with the only possible answer. Try it out, it’s fun!

Ratatouille Review

Am letzten Dienstag war ich mit meiner Kollegin im Kino, wir haben uns “Ratatouille” angesehen, den neusten Film aus dem Hause Pixar (wobei “neu” auch nicht ganz der richtige Ausdruck ist, da der Film ja schon im Juni in den USA in den Kinos war, wie immer kommen die Pixarfilme (“Nemo”, “The Incredibles”, “Cars”) bei uns in Europa erst im Herbst).

Meine Wertung: Zwei Daumen hoch! 5 von 5 Sternen! Alle Neune! ^^ Wie man es sich eben gewohnt ist von den Leuten bei Pixar.

Der Film erweckt eine wunderbare französische-Küche-Atmosphäre, obwohl beide Hauptcharakter mit amerikanischem Akzent sprechen (ich habe ihn auf englisch gesehen). Aber da der Film in Paris spielt, sprechen alle anderen Charaktere mit ‘fronsösischem Akson’, was einfach herrlich tönt 🙂
Die Story ist kommt ziemlich schnell voran, vorallem am Anfang, da geht es gleich zur Sache: Oma schiesst wie wild mit der Schrotflinte herum und versucht die Ratte zu erwischen, welche sich rettend durch die zerklirrenden Fensterscheiben rettet. Er (die Ratte, Remy) liebt es zu kochen, sein Idol ist der grosse Koch Gusteau, dessen Motto ist: “Tout le monde peut cuisinier!” (“Jeder kann kochen!”). So gelangt er nach Paris, wo er dem jungen Linguini hilft, sich in Gusteaus Restaurant als Koch hochzuarbeiten. Die ganze Story ist sehr durchdacht aufgebaut und wirkt nicht an den Haaren herbeigezogen, ganz im Gegenteil! Es gibt auch einige Moralstellen, wie für Pixar üblich. Aber auch die wirken nicht aufgezwungen, sondern ergeben sich ganz natürlich aus dem Storyfluss.

Filmografisch hat Ratatouille auch einiges zu bieten: Bei Szenen mit Anton Ego (dem Bösewichten im Film) ist alles grau in grau gehalten und auch er selber ist grau und fad, und hat ein Gesicht voller Augenringe. Heitere Szenen hingegen sind total farbenfroh!

Und natürlich ist es computeranimatorisch absolute Spitzenklasse! So schönes computeranimiertes Fell, sei es trocken oder nass, habt ihr noch nie gesehen! Die Wassereffekte sind genauso atemberaubend die Licht- und Schatteneffekte, und überhaupt sind die Bewegungen von Ratte und Mensch flüssig und natürlich.

Fazit: Schaut ihn euch an!

Heroes, Folge 3

Gestern lief die 3. Folge Heroes auf SF zwei, und die wollte ich natürlich nicht verpassen! Es war wieder sehr spannend, meiner Meinung nach gab es keine langweiligen Stellen. Bis jetzt irren alle Protagonisten noch einzeln und ohne etwas voneinander zu wissen umher und versuchen die Puzzleteile zusammenzusetzen, jedoch ahnen sie bereits, dass sie zu etwas grösserem bestimmt sind.

Am besten gefällt mir nach wie vor Hiro, der Japaner, der das Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum durch reine Willenskraft manipulieren kann. So hielt er in dieser Folge z.B. die Zeit an und rettete ein kleines Mädchen vor dem sicheren Tod durch einen Lastwagen. Auch ist Hiro meiner Meinung nach jener mit der grössten Selbstsicherheit. Und ausserdem heisst er Hiro, wie es sich für einen Hero gehört 😉

Was auch nicht vergessen werden darf ist die Arbeit der Kameraleute und Regisseure. Die Einstellungen sind immer sehr passend gewählt, so ist z.B. bei Szenen, in denen es gruselig zu und her geht, alles sehr kalt (für nicht-Foto- und Cinematografen: das ganze Bild wirkt bläulich).
